Ingredients

Apple Filling
  • 6 medium Granny Smith Apples Peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 0.25 cup Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 tablespoon Butter Cut into small pieces
Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 0.5 cup Rolled Oats
  • 0.5 cup Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Cold Unsalted Butter Cut into small pieces

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Large Bowl
  • Pastry blender or fork

Method

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate. Dot the top with the 1 tablespoon of butter pieces.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the crumble topping.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil.
  8. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional).

Notes

For a crispier crumble, use less brown sugar and more oats. You can also add a pinch of cardamom or allspice to the filling for extra warmth.
