Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate. Dot the top with the 1 tablespoon of butter pieces.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the crumble topping.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil.
- Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional).
Notes
For a crispier crumble, use less brown sugar and more oats. You can also add a pinch of cardamom or allspice to the filling for extra warmth.
