Ingredients

  • 2 lb Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • Fresh chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Sharp knife or mandoline for slicing potatoes
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Aluminum foil
  • Oven mitts

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven. Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: Make the roux. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Add the dairy. Gradually pour in the heavy cream and whole milk while whisking. Continue whisking until the mixture becomes smooth and thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Season the sauce. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  5. Step 5: Add the cheese. While the mixture is still warm, add the cheddar cheese and Gruyère cheese. Stir until fully melted.
  6. Step 6: Layer the potatoes. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced Yukon Gold potatoes on the bottom. Pour half of your cheesy sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Step 7: Add another layer. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  8. Step 8: Cover and bake. Cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Step 9: Uncover and brown. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  10. Step 10: Cool and garnish. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh chives or parsley if desired.

Notes

Consider adding crispy bacon bits or experimenting with different cheese types for variations.
