Ingredients

Cake Ingredients
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) Chocolate cake mix
  • 3 Eggs As specified on cake mix box
  • 1/3 cup Vegetable oil As specified on cake mix box
  • 1 cup Water As specified on cake mix box
  • 1 cup Instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
Frosting & Decorations
  • 16 ounces Chocolate frosting
  • 1/4 cup Milk For thinning frosting, if needed
  • 8-10 Chocolate sandwich cookies For tombstones
  • 4 ounces Green candy melts For grass
  • 2 ounces White candy melts For tombstone writing
  • Optional Gummy worms

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wooden skewers or spoon handle
  • Spatula
  • Toothpick

Method

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven according to cake mix instructions. Prepare cake batter as directed on the box, using eggs, oil, and water.
  2. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan and bake until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Let the cake cool completely in the pan before proceeding.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  5. Once the cake is cool, poke holes all over the top using a wooden skewer or the handle of a wooden spoon. Don't poke all the way through.
  6. Slowly pour the pudding mixture over the poked cake, allowing it to seep into the holes. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb.
  7. Frost the cake with the chocolate frosting. If the frosting is too thick, add a little milk to thin it out.
  8. Create tombstones by breaking chocolate sandwich cookies in half. Melt green candy melts and spread around the base of the cake for grass. Melt white candy melts and write RIP on the tombstones using a toothpick. Add gummy worms (optional). Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra spooky effect, use black food coloring to tint the pudding mix slightly. You can also use different types of candy to decorate the graveyard.
