Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 lbs Russet Potatoes peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup Whole Milk (2% milk works well too)
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter cut into pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1-2 tablespoons Sour Cream or Cream Cheese optional, for extra richness
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder optional

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Potato Masher
  • Mixing Bowl (optional)

Method

Instructions
  1. Place quartered potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add about an inch of water above the potatoes.
  2. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain potatoes thoroughly in a colander. Let them sit for a few minutes to steam off excess moisture.
  4. Return potatoes to the pot. Add milk, butter, and optional garlic powder.
  5. Mash potatoes until smooth and creamy using a potato masher or electric mixer (start on low speed).
  6. Stir in salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Stir in sour cream or cream cheese, if using.
  7. Serve immediately or keep warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding roasted garlic or herbs like chives or rosemary. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
